Music from beyond the Pyrenees
Mediaeval and Traditional Music

The Veziana ensemble invites the listener on an exploration of musical and cultural practices from both sides of the Pyrenees, from the middle Age through to the contemporary performance of traditional repertoire.

The regions which converged artistically toward the Occitan were Italy and Spain. The Occitan heritage has a long history of forging links between the Iberian and Italian peninsulas, remaining receptive to influences from all round the Mediterranean.

The artists, coming from variety of different origins, seek common ground in a boundary-crossing venture. Through bringing this rare music to light they bring out the similarities which can be perceived between composed and popular music from southern Europe.

Veziana performs in events such as festivals and concerts in venues with a repertoire of music issuing from both sides of the Pyrenees. A composition from the toulousan poet Peyre Godolin can be found juxtaposed as easily with traditional Gascon rondeaux as with Renaissance Branles. Andalucian, Catalan, Aragonian or Basque music flows forth as if the symbolise the many and varied streams trickling down the numerous valleys throughout the Pyrenean mountains.

Veziana also performs in places of architectural interest, churches and historic monuments, drawing on a repertoire of early music such as Troubadour songs, Sepharade romances, Cantigas of Santa Maria as well as Ars Nova works and extracts from Andalucian suites.
